DEPRESSION IN GERMANY

LONDON, February 25. The Cologne correspondent of ‘ Tiie Times ’ says the serious increase in unemployment in Western Germany is i'ltlrituhed to depression in the Ruhr industries. There are 25,000 unemployed at Essen. Kruno's are dismissing a further 4,000, and 45,000 are idle at Cologne, where one-fifth of the population is receiving doles. Mines are closing daily, and .stool and textile mills are dismissing thousands of hands. Employers hoped to alleviate the distress by reducing wages and retaining more workers, but tile trade* unions opposed the scheme, declaring that the only remedy was to close the smaller concerns, concentrate on mass production, and not interfere with wages.
