POLICE COURT

MONDAY, MARCH 15, (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) REMANDED. James Lloyd Jones was charged with the theft of £l4 in money and one Seamen’s Union bond valued at Is, the property of Thomas James Simpson. Chief-detective Lewis, in asking for a remand until Friday, stated that the boat on which the accused had worked would not be in port until then. He had previously appeared before the court, and was then released on his own recognisances. The accused was remanded until Thursday, being released on the same conditions as previously. THE FORBIDDEN DRINK. Thomas Alexander Tobin was charged with procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, and also with having entered the Ocean Beach Hotel during the currency of the order. The accused was fined 20s and costs on the first charge, the second information being struck out. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. David Thompson pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and also to having used obscene language in Cumberland street. The Senior Sergeant said that the man was arrested in the Queen’s Gardeuj; last night. There were a number of people about when he used the language. On the first charge the accused was fined 10s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, and on the second £3, the alternative being fixed at fourteen days’ imprisonment. POLICE TO INVESTIGATE. William Gibson was charged with having been found by night, without lawful excuse, in the railway yard under circumstances that did not disclose the commission of or the intention to commit any other offence. The accused pleaded guilty. Senior-sergeant Quartermain said that the accused had told so many lies about his movements that it had been decided to take his finger prints. A remand was asked for in order that further inquiries could be made. Gibson was remanded until Wednesday. MAINTENANCE. David Russell Thompson was proceeded against for the disobedience of a maintenance order made in respect to his wife and children, the arrears amounting to £32. Mr E. J. Anderson appeared for complainant. The defendant said that be was out of work at present. Ho bad been a motor salesman, and was the defendant in an action at the Police Court on Friday, in which a man was knocked down by a car driven by him. He gave the injured man an 1.0. U. for £l2 on the understanding that the amount would bo paid when ho obtained employment.
