'LEAVE IT TO JANE'

That is one tiling that the public will not do. They liked Jane at first, and like her more now, and their liking for the lovely young lady is going to increase and continue. Such are the present clear indications. Last night another large “house” made Jane’s acquaintance and duly paid homage. Others of the company also piled up their conquests —subordinate as well as principals earning praise for performing their duties faithfully and intelligently, not as hirelings, but as collaBorateurs, for there was hardly a moment in the two and a-half hours’ presentation that did not bring forth impromptu garnishing in complete agreement with the general design. We expressly acknowledge the appropriate and skilful work of the ballet and the chorus. To tell the truth, the author las not provided them with the largeness of opportunity that some musical comedies afford, but they amplify with splendid discretion and keep up the movement in such a way as to supply plenty of action and color. The orchestra, too, is to be thanked for its good work, particularly in the grading of accompaniments to the solo voices and in keeping the etcetera man in his place, so that he is of real assistance and never becomes a nuisance. This company is the first of its sort for a long time to give the orchestra a fair chance by letting the music dominate and using the tympani and weird instruments for passing illustration and embellishment. ‘ Leave it to Jane ’ is to bo played again this evening, tomorrow, and Thursday.

* WHIRLED INTO HAPPINESS ' Next Friday evening will see the first production in Dunedin of what is claimed to be one of the raciest and most melodious musical plays presented for many years, ‘ Whirled Into Happiness.’ ft will constitute the final production of the J. Ci Williamson Musical Comedy Company for the last three nights of the season. Joyous and bright, it is claimed to he an exceptional tonic, and drives' dull care right away. This delightful farcical comedy, which has enjoyed phenomenally successful seasons in Sydney and Melbourne, is full of indescribably humorous adventures, that follow in quick succession, and keep the audience in a constant roar of merriment. In addition, there are gorgeous ballets, catchy songs, beautiful scenery, and a chorus of lovely girls. Headed by Athol Tier, who will be seen in another capital comedy role, and Jack Cannot, in a breezy characterisation, and other favorite members of the company, ‘Whirled Into Happiness’ is a bright and convincing entertainment that should not be missed. Artists making their first appearance this season include Miss Nora M'Manus, an exceptionally talented New Zealand soprano, and Miss Rosie Le Varde, a clever comedienne from the leading London theatres. Box plans for this production are now open at The Bristol.
