ALTHOUSE AND MIDDLETON

TWO SUPREME VOCALISTS That tho singer holds a foremost place in the hearts of people is evidenced by the interest displayed in tho forthcoming recitals to ho given by Paul Althouso (tenor) and Arthur Middleton (baritone) in His Majesty’s Theatre on Wednesday and Friday next under the direction of the well-known firm of impresarios, Messrs J. and N. Tait. The patronage given and the enthusiastic appreciation shown to groat musical artists such as Melba, Clara Butt, M'Cnrmack, Heifertz, and Spivakovsky. and more recently to Kreisler and Galli-Curci, have clearly demonstrated that the jieople of Now Zealand are musically discriminating. They want only the best artists, and it is a matter of pride and congratulation that in the visit of each great artist a keener interest is being evinced and larger attendances are being recorded, proof positive that it is not only tho strictly musical who appreciate and have a desire to hear fine instrumentalists and singers and good music. Ono thing has been convincingly shown: a distinguished artist mav always bo relied upon to present on ‘his or her programme some selections that appeal to tho general public. In this respect Alt-house and Middleton are invariably considerate. Their programmes always contain a number of really high-class selections, vot they find room for certain songs that are melodious and ballads that touch tho hearts of their hearers. Thus the two programmes to he presented in Dunedin will include excerpts from opera and oratorio and a generous selection of folk songs and popular ballads. The box plans for those recitals are at The Bristol, where intending patrons would do well to hook. Other particulars are advertised.
