PIPE SAND CONTEST The Exhibition Highland Pipe Band Contest Committee met last evening, Mr J. C. Rigby being in the chain The Chairman reported that Mr Scott Colville had advised the; recent deputation that, owing to booking of the Festival Hall, there would be no opportunity to stage dancing competitions in connection with tile contest to he held on Wednesday, February 24.. A number of letters were received with inquiries from some of the competing hands from different parts of New Zealand. The Wanganui Highland Pipe Band, in forwarding the amount of its entry bond, approved the conditions for the contest, and congratulated the committee upon its success in obtaining such a fine list of entries. a letter also advised the participation of the Mat aura Kilties’ Band The Wellington Caledonian Band regretted its inability to enter. It was reported that all arrangements for accommodation of the visiting bands (each of which has a maximum personnel of sixteen members) was being inferred to the Exhibition Bureau. Mr Scott Colville advised that tbo Exhibition directors had adopted .the proposal to hold the contest, and accepted the programme submitted by the committee. The prize moneys were: First, £l6O and medals; second, £100; third, £SO. Mr Colville asked the committee to procure the John Begg, Harry Lauder, and Adam Munro Shields, which would be contested tor. The Exhibition authorities also allowed a limited expenditure.—The committee decided to accept the offer of the Exhibition Company, and to reply that the directors’ .suggestions be approved and the company thanked tor its evident enterprise. The Secretary mentioned that there ■was a. possibility of citizens and firms donating various special prizes in connection with the contest. The Chairman reported that all arrangements were well in hand, and the committee hoped to make the contest well worthy of the Exhibition and of the dominion
