POLICE COURT
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3. (Before Air J. 11. Bartholomew, S.M.) COLD AND WARMER. “ It was a cold day, aud 1 had had a few drinks,” was the only excuse put forward by George Page when called upon to answer a charge of stealing an overcoat valued at £5. The Magistrate made it warm for him by imparting a sentence of two months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Senior-sergoant Quartcmain said that Rage took the coat from outside the shop of George Hay, in Princes street, and immediately afterwards endeavored to dispose of it in Speight’s Brewery. Accused denied trying to sell the coat, and said that he had been working for tho past eight mouths “off and on.” The Magistrate said that, judging by accused’s record, he was too tired to work. His object in stealing the coat was no doubt to obtain easy money. REMANDED. James Rayme Brown was charged wtih having failed to comply with the terms of his release on probation at Invercargill. He was remanded to appear on Monday. Mr F. G. Duncan appeared for the accused.
