QUICK discharge of damaged cargo [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 12. Tho discharging of the damaged cargo from the steamer Kent is being carried on as speedily as possible. There are only a few hundred tons leit in the lower hold of No, 2 hatch., wheic Lhe fire occurred. Gangs wore put on yesterday to discharge cargo from Nqs. 1 and .1 holds. The cargo in these holds was only damaged by water. Where tho fire was fiercest in No. 2 hold tho iron beams and deck plates are badly buckled. This ironwork is being sent ashore to be straightened. Now° plates are being fitted into the ship’s side where holes were cut and a large amount of repair work is being done to the insulation and fittings, in tho hold. „ . It is hoped that sufficient progress will have been made by about the middle of next week to allow tho Kent to take her departure for Wellington, if the strike is settled. There are now some hundreds of tons of the damaged cargo stocked in a shed on shore. A salvage sale will bo held.
