garding applications for repairs, improvements, etc., were dealt with as follows; • i Musselburgh.—Committee applied fo» repairs to the school gate on Alfred street. Architect considered that tha, repairs should be carried out by th*] committee. —Approved. _ . Ravensbourne. —A pplication for feno- | ing between school and gymnasium, grates for school, and repairs to school roof. The architect reported that this would be attended to during the coming vacation. He reported that tha painting of the school was not necessary at present. Ho recommended that the committee’s application for tha erection of a new infant room on a new site be held over for the present. • Approved. Albany Street. —Architect recommended that the head master’s application for fencing a small _ piece of ground adjoining the new highway, to be used as a school garden, be granted} cost, about £4.—Approved. Balclutha High School. —Architect reported that plans and specification* had been prepared for portion of tho new high school in accordance with the department’s instructions. —-A commit--tee, consisting of the chairman, the Hon. D. T. Fleming, and Mr G. W, Wood, was appointed to deal with the tenders, which close on August 28. George Street. —Committee _ applies for improvement to_ the drainage or school grounds, repairs to school root, and replacement of perished spouting. Architect recommended concrete channel to improve the drainage; cost, about. £lO. The leak in the roof had been repaired some time ago. The spouting would be renewed. —Granted. North Taieri.- —Committee forwarded account for stovepipe lor school and for repairing of water pipe from school to tank. £7 12s Od. Tho architect recommended that the board contribute £3 , Is 8d as its share of the cost of tba work.—Granted. Portobello and Broad Bay.—The architect recommended that a septic tank system be installed, of which the department would probably provide half.—Department to be approached for half-cost. If request granted, the work to go on in each case. Green Island.—Head master applied for a clipboard for handwork material and two tables for infant work. Recommended by senior inspector.—■ Granted. Henley.—School Committee asked that material to fence off the paddock from the playground be supplied; tha School Committee to do the work.—■ Referred to chairman to act. Green Island. —Committee applied for provijion of teachers’ room at school.—■ Architect to prepare a report with a view to approaching department. Musselburgh.—Committee applied for remodelling of the infant department. —lt was decided to inform the committee that the board considered that other schools had a prior claim for such

work. i Normal.—Architect recommended tha remodelling of the rooms in which Standard IV. and Standard V. are now taught. Estimated cost, with heating svstem and new furniture, about £700; without heating, £s6o.—Application to be referred to the department, the board being prepared to pay one-third of the - cost.

Owaka'.—The, committee asked if it could purchase the Pounawea School building for use _as a dental clinic.—Permission was given to th, committea to remove the school, the toard not to ho put to any expense in the matter. George Street,—The committee applied for installation of six-ifectric liglit points in the school and ono for deli noascope.—Granted. Moray Place School Committee asked for the remodelling of the school, now stops at main entrance, repairs to cellar door and window, linoleum for office floor.—Referred to architect.

The application of the Broad Bay Committee for the sum of £4B Os Sd, subsidy on work in connection with asphalting playground, was granted on the usual conditions.

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION GRANT. The Education Department notified that Idle general administration grant for the year 1925 would be £4,05(1 15s, made up of capitation on 20,120 at os 6tl £3,536 15s. plus grant £750, less deduction Public Expenditure Act, 1921-22, £230. The Chairman said that if tjie capitation grant was £1,250 instead of £750 it would not be too much. On the motion of Air JVHkinson it was decided to refer the matter to tho Education Boards' Association.

It was decided, on tho motion of Die Hon, D. T. Fleming, to urge upon tho Government the necessity of increasing the general administration grant.

ATTENDANCE. The Education Department wrote stating that it was proposed to substitute 66 2-3 per cent, for 50 present as the proportion of file, children on the school roll required to be present on any half-day before, the attendance on that half-day is reckoned when calculating tho average attendance.—Received. GENERAL. Tho department forwarded a draft copy of the proposed manual and technical instruction regulations.—lt was decided to write to the department Slating that if the control of manual training subjects was to be placed in tho hands of the Technical School Board of Managers, the board considered that it was a retrograde step.
