SAFEGUARDING AMERICA
DEFENCE APPROPRIATIONS REDUCTION PROPOSED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, August 11. A message from Swampscott states that the big guns of tho army and navy are trained on part of Mr Coolidge’s economy programme. The Budget Director (Mr Lord) favors cutting for 1926 approximately 50,000,000d0l from the 1925 military appropriations, which total 574,000,000 dollars. This is agreeable to Mr Coolidge, though General Pershing and other high officers are opposed to it on the ‘grounds of national safety. Last winter Congress overruled Mr Lord and appropriated 29,000,000d0l more than was recommended for national defence. The proposed Budget totals 3,088,000,000dol, only 200,008,000 less than the present year’s Budget. The reduction in the military appropriation is countered by increases in other departments, and by 25,000,000d0l for a public building programme. _ Mr Coolidgo favors unstinted appropriations for the aviation services in the army and navy. He believes in the development of the air forces. Tho aviation expenditures, which in 1925 were 19,000,000d01, will probably reach 25,000,000d0l in 1926. A. and N.Z. Cable.
