A GREAT SCORE
Gounod’s ‘Faust,’ of which the original score-is to be sold in Paris, is only one of forty-five musical versions of the legend (says the ‘Star’). Wagner declared that “ no consideration of friendship for Gounod has been able to induce me to hear bis ‘ Faust.’ ” But Wagner’s-criticism has not prevented this ‘ Faust ’ from becoming the only one with any hold on popular audiences. With all its fascination for composers ‘ Faust ’ is by no means the theme most frequently employed in opera. Don Quixote figured in forty-seven different scores. Dido in forty-eight, and Serairamide in forty-seven.
