THE BIG EXHIBITION

MEETING OF DIRECTORS The weekly meeting of the directors of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition Company was held last night, and was attended by Messrs J, Sutherland Ross (chairman), 0. Speight. 0. Todd, W. R. Hayward. T. Somerville, P. L. Halsted, H. F. Sincock, and H. L. Tapley. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. The Executive Committee reported that Mr Anscombe had asked tor information as to how the motor vehicle traffic to the Festival Hall would be arranged. The matter had been re* ferred to the general manager to report generally on the whole question of motor traffic within the Exhibition grounds. The architect had been asked to submit an estimate of the cost of top-dressing motor parking area No. The report was adopted. HOUSING COMMITTEE.

The Housing Executive Committee reported that the number of beds available in private homes was 4,350. The register was submitted to the meeting, and it was a recommendation to the directors that it be adopted and printed forthwith. The committee had resolved that the directors bo asked to define the duties of the committee as its original functions had been fulfilled, and now it was a matter of running the bureau to book clients in. The report was adopted, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the committee for the enthusiastic manner in which it had performed its duties. PUBLICITY COMMITTEE. The Publicity Committee reported that the publicity officer had submitted a sketch of the Exhibition buildings, and that it had resolved that the artist be instructed to go on with the completion of the sketch. The Chairman stated that he had been informed that the model of the Exhibition buildings was creating a great deal of interest in Christchurch. The report was adopted. WOMEN’S SECTION.

The women’s section reported that the following committees had met, and had discussed their special activities : Literature: This committee, which hopes to exhibit the published works of the women authors and composers of New Zealand, has issued its circular, and the response is most satisfactory. Housing: This committee continues its present work of visiting the private houses registered at the accommodation bureau. Their reports are of valuable assistance to the bureau, and will have the result of assuring visitors of good accommodation. Concert: This committee has had its final meeting, with Mrs R. Hudson as chairwoman. Tfie amount by which the section will benefit by the concert has not yet been announced, but many thanks are due to Mrs Hudson for her kindness in so materially contributing to the success of the section. Lectures and Demonstrations: This committee has begun to draw up an attractive programme of lecturettes on topics of interest to women, and, given the facilities, should he able to give groups of women interesting instruction on many subjects in which they are interested. Fine Arts; This live committee is part of the permanent display section, and has its plans well in hand for the display of the exhibits which come within this special committee's activities. Interesting inquiries reach this committee, which has been gn mg advice to many intending exhibitors. Lay-out Committee: The planning, designing, and general lay-out of the section are now occupying the minds of the committee appointed for that purpose. Two meetings have been 1 e Id, and it is hoped to present for approval within a fow days a plan of the layout, as well ns a suggested frontage of the section. Each display section is being considered, and every effort is being made to plan the section to suit the various displays of art and crafts. The section is being honored by ah exhibit from Her Majesty Queen Mary, and it is to be hoped that a fit setting can he arranged for this exhibit. The report was adopted.
