PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY
Tho above society will give its thirl concert this season in His Majesty’s Theatre on Wednesday, August 5, when a most interesting programme will ho presented. It includes tho overture solennelle ‘ 1812,’ by Tschaikowsky. This stirring overture is descriptive, of Napoleon advancing and retreating from Moscow, and is a fine piece of instrumentation. For the performance of this work Signor Snnariso has obtained the services of the Band of. the First Battalion and the St.. Kilda Municipal Baud, who will assist the society. This will moan that there will be over one hundred performers taking part. Messrs A. and T. Burt have also cast a full set of bells for the overture. The programme will commence .with tho stirring ' march, ‘ March oi the Allies’ (Squariso), and will be followed by the overture to the opera ‘ Lo Boi d*’ys,’ by Lalo. The first part of the programme will conclude with the symphonic poem, ‘Hymn to £he Sun,’ bv Mascagni. Another very attractive item will be ‘ Avo Maria,’ by Schubert, a cornet solo being played by Mr Bud Wills, champion cornet player of Aew Zealand
The second part of the programme includes two light pieces for the string section, and tho ‘ Prelude,’ by Rachmaninoff. The vocalists for this concert will be Miss Elsie Bryant and Mr Arthur Lungley.
