DERELICT IK BASS STRAIT Press Association—By Telegraph!—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Press Association. MELBOURNE, July 24. The Holyman small steamer Awaroa is derelict in Bass Strait in the direct. track of vessels bound round Wilson’s Promontory. A wireless message from the steamer Huntingdon reported that she picked Tip the crew of the Awaroa. numbering thirteen, in the vicinity or Cape Liptrap. The reasons for the abandonment of the vessel are not stated. The Awaroa was en route from Hobart with general cargo for Melbourne, and it is supposed that she was disabled by the rough weather. SPRANG A LEAK. MELBOURNE, July 24. Details in connection with the abandonment of the Awaroa show that the vessel sprang a leak during a heavy gale and began to fill. The crow worked alt night knee-deep in water and jettisoned a portion of the timber cargo in their endeavors to save the ship. Eventually it was decided to abandon her. An attempt was made to launch a lifeboat, but it was smashed by the waves. The crew managed to launch the second lifeboat, and after being battered about for a considerable time in the rough sea they were rescued .in an exhausted condition by the Huntingdon, which saw their distress signals.
