TAIEIU BOWLING CLUB

The annual meeting, held on Monday evening last, was presided over by*the president (Mr IC. Currie), there being a good attendance of members. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the Chairman stated that, although the year had been a successful one socially and financially, they bad not finished up as well as in previous years from a playing point of view. In the four-rink championships they did not score a win, whilst in the champion rink contest they won one game only, owing to the fact that the team had not had any practice. The club championship was won by the redoubtable veteran, Mr W. Carswell, for the ninth time, while in the champion of champions contest he‘ was only beaten in the last game. The rose bowl was won by President Currie, Dr Spedding being the runner-up. Dealing with the financial aspect of the report, the Chairman stated that £49 3s 4d had been expended in bringing the club’s plant up to date. Ho congratulated the chib upon finishing up with a credit balance of £l9 11s 4d. Eighteen new members had been elected, which made their membership stand at seventy-five.

After the report, had been adopted the question of raising the annual subscription to £2 was discussed. but it found very little favor with the majority of those present, and was rejected. General appreciation was expressed of the capable manner in which the grconkceper, Mr Allen, had carried out his duties during the mist season.

The resignation of Mr W. Howard as secretary and treasurer was .accepted w ; ‘’i rerret.

The election of officers for the ensuing season resulted as follows: —President, Mr E, Currie (re-elected) ; vice-presi-dent, Rev. W.' W. Ewart; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr M. J. Thompson; solo selector. Mr D. Gibson: Green Committee —Mr A. F. One'cb and Mr W. Gordon; General Committee— Messrs Allan, Finday, and Stevenson. . A special vote of thanks was recorded the lady friends. MAYORAL ENTERTAINMENT.

On Monday evening last the mayor and mayoress (Mr and Mrs H. Walls) entertained the councillors and their wives in the newly-renovated Council Chambers. The first part of the evening was pleasantly spent with a progressive euchre tournament, after which the company were invited to partake of a dainty supper provided by the mayoress. Several toasts were honored. The remainder of the evening was passed with songs and recitations. Taieri athletic clubs, which has already drawn up a comprehensive programme. The financial obligations are being borne jointly by the Taieri County Council and the Borough Council. AMERICAN FLEET VISIT. The committee appointed to make the necessary arrangements for entertaining the party of American sailors who are to pay Mosgiol a visit on Saturday. August 11, already has things in good train, and the ladies who have undertaken the catering and social side of the event arc working most entlmsiastically, while the sports part of the ,P. V enl'M-t'iinnient is in the hands of Mr J. F. Frew, who lost no time in calling together the committee of the Taieri athletic Clubs, which has drawn up a comprehensive programme. THE WEATHER. Heavy rain sot in over the Taieri Plains on Thursday evening, and continued with but few breaks all through the night. The hills all round are bearing a heavy coat of snow. All the streams are rising. BAPTIST CHURCH CONCERT.

The concert promoted by the members of the Bible class in connection with the above church, hold in the Coronation Hull on Wednesday evening, was a success, both financially and artistically. The entire musical programme was provided by Mr Ernest Drake’s pupils, and the fact that almost every item was enthusiastically encored was sufficient proof of the appreciation of ft full house. The tenor solos of Mr Alfred Walmsley were undoubtedly the outstanding feature of a very tine, even performance,. At the end o( a most successful programme the chairman (Mr W. T. Kay) expressed the sense ot gratitude which the church was under to the ladies and gentlemen who had given their services. Mr Alfred Walmsley, solo,. ‘ Songs of '\raby ’: Miss Roma Buss, solo, ‘The Spirit Flower’; Mr Arthur Langley, solo ‘My Friend ’; Miss Portcous. solo, ‘ Tommy Lad ’; Miss Jefferson, humorous recitation; Messrs "Walmsley and Lunglov. duet, ‘The Battle Eve.’ Miss Lungley’s effort as accompanist was a feature of the evening.
