GOULD mi FACE SEAS CAPTAIN RUNS HER THROUGH BREAKERS [Pep. United Press Association.! AVIIAKATANE, July 23. Hie auxiliary ketch Eairbnrn, bound 1 rum Whakalaiie to AVhangaron, was stranded last night on Ocean Beach, sumo distance from AVhakutane. The vessel loft Wbakat ano on Tuesday evening, and soon alter met with dirty weather, and sought shelter at Whale Island. * Last night the gale became so heavy that the vessel dragged _ her anchor, and Captain Teixeira decided to put to sea. at R p.m. A stormy northerly gale was blowing, and the captain "kept on a, northerly tack to avoid the AVbakatanc Heads. A lingo sea, was running, and eventually the captain decided that the best course was to run the vessel ashore through the breakers. As tbe vessel entered the breakers a mountainous sea almost submerged her, mid the captain ordered the engineer out of the engine room. The engineer and the crew took to the rigging, while tbe captain remained at IIin” wheel. It was a trying moment till the vessel got over tbe last breaker and landed high and dry on the bench. At one moment, tbe wheel was wrested from tbe captain’s grasp, and lie was struck on the ribs and thigh, sustaining nastv bruises.
The captain considers that when the weather moderates he will be able to continue the voyage.
