DUNEDIN SITTINGS COMMENCED The Dunedin sittings of (lie Arbitration Court'were eonunenwl this morning. His Honor Hr Justice Eraser presided. and associated with him were Mr W. Scott (employers’ representative) and Mr 11. Hunter (employees’ representative]. DISPUTES. In the matter of the Dunedin journalists’ dispute, Mr 11. .Ferguson, who appeared for the union, asked that the recommendation from the Conciliation council should he made into an award. —.His Honor; It is very satisfactory that a settlement has keen arrived at. Ho added that Dunedin was getting a very enviable reputation as far as the settlement of disputes was concerned. —The court made an award in terms of the recommendation of the Conciliation Council.—Mr Ferguson said, in reference to the Invercargill journalists’ dispute, litat he understood that, one or two slight alterations were to be made to the Conciliation Council’s recommendations. —It was decided to deal with the matter at Invercargill on Monday afternoon, at 2.15. In the Otago and Southland farm assistants’ dispute Mr IV. Batchelor, who appeared for the union, stated that the Conciliation Council had made no recommendation.—Mr A. S. Cook.son, on behalf of the employers, said that there were two different disputes. The hearing would probably take some tiinP.—The case was sent down for hearing on Friday, July 31, at 2.U> p.m. The hearing of the quarrymen s dispute was fixed for Saturday, August I, at 10 a.in. APPLICATION. An application was made by the union to add tbe Strand Salon and (bo Broadway Tea Booms as parties to the dominion tea rooms and restaurant employees’ award.—Mr G. S. Thomson, who appeared in support of iho application, said that Jio understood that there was an ohejetion as far as the Strand Salon was concerned. The position was that the Strand Salon was run hy the Strand Tea Booms Company. All that he wanted to bo satisfied with was that the casual employees employed at the salon wore covered hy the awvd. The salon was used exclusively for wedding breakfasts and other functions. —His Honor; The employees concerned would be covered.— Mr Cookson said that the employees would be covcered by clause (i of the award. The Strand Company either owned or leased the salon, and they were, of course, hound by Hie award. It would be to tbe disadvantage of the Strand Company if tbe salon wore included. Tie quite appreciated Mr Thomson’s point, however.—Tbe application in respect to the Broadway Tea Rooms was granted. Mr Thomson agreeing to withdraw the application in connection with the salon.—An application was made to extend the Dominion Tea Booms award to the Oamaru district.—Mr Thomson said that when the dominion award came into force the Oama.ru award bad not expired.—Mr Cook.son said that there were no objections.—The_ application was granted.—ln connection with a similar application in respect to the Southland district, the court decided to hear the matter of the application for exemptions at Invercargill on Monday afternoon.

COMPENSATION CASES. The ease of Aitken Alnir v. _Erank Crosbie was sot down for bearing at Invercargill on the morning of Tuesday, July 28. Mr A. N. Haggitt appeared for'defendant. In the ease of Catherine Ann Bolton v. Waitaki County Council, medical evidence will be taken on the morning of Friday, July 31. The remainder of the cjse will Im taken at Oamaru on tho afternoon of August llr A. C. Stephens appeared for plaintiff and Mr A. N. Haggitt for defendant^ In tlie ease of Samuel William Jarvis v. the Otago Harbor Board, some medical evidence will be taken to-morrow morning. Tbc ease will be continued on Thursday, Jul.y 30, ami, if necessary, on the morning of the following day. Air P. S'. Anderson appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr A. N. Haggitt for lire Harbor Board.

OTHER MATTERS. An application from _ the Oaniaru Plumbers’ Apprenticeship Committee for a. now apprenticeship order will bo hoard on Monday, August 3, at Oamarn. The Shop Assistants’ Union asked for an interpretation to show whether a message boy, employed as such, was covered bv tbe award, and to have a message 'hoy’s duties defined.—The matter will ho taken to-morrow morn-
