NORTH-EAST HARBOR NOTES

A special meeting of the \oung Men's Club was held last Wednesday evening fur the purpose of considering the Musical Committee’s report. It was decided that a fancy dress call be held on the last Wednesday otncxc. mouth, and various sub-coin mittoes were sot up to carry out necessary details. At the conclusion ol the meeting the members indulged in a useful gymnastic practice. '“The main topic of conversation among the pupils of tho local school is on "the forthcoming school competitions. This popular function takes place mi Saturday. The pupils have been busy practising tor some time, and some good work should be put For some lime past tbe (lice Club had practised hard for the first concert of the present season, which was given last Saturday night. In addition to its own eight items, the club had the assistance of several local and visiting artists. The vocal, elocutionary. and instrumental items were well rendered, and were greatly appreciated bv tho audience. Sir Edward Elgar’s setting of the National Anthem was given by the eluh as the opening number, Mrs Astley Black being entrusted with the solo'part. 'The accompaniments during the evening were tastefully played by Airs Desmoulins and Miss Gardner. Prior to lhe > last item being given, tho club’s president (Mr R. Luke) thanked the visiting performers for their assistance, this being acknowledged by Mr Cooper, who paid a tribute to the good work of tho club. The programme provided was as follows: —Songs by Miss Is’ikander, Miss Stubbs, Mrs A. Black, Airs Gardner, Air Service, Air Cooper, and Air Gardner, duets by Airs Black and Airs Kellett; recitation by Aliss Smith; cornet solo by Air Lowrie; and the following items by the Glee Club;— ‘ Softly Falls the Shades,’ 1 Carry Ale Back to Old Virginny,’ ‘ Londonderry Town,’ ‘Border Ballad, ‘Song of Volga Boatman,’ ‘Simple Simon,’ and the ‘Soldiers’ Chorus.’ A light supper was handed round, after which an enjoyable dance was held, tho music for which was supplied by tho orchestra. When it became known that the Mr Small who was killed in tbe Avorth Island last week-end as tbe result of a motor mishap was Mr E. F. Small, for some time resident of this district, much regret was expressed at the loss sustained by AMs Small and her family. When resident hero the late Mr Small took a keen interest in local affairs, and particularly in the Boating Club, of which ho proved an active member.
