DRAINAGE MATTERS

BIG NORTH END SCHEME. WORK ON EXHIBITION SITE. The first meeting of the Drainage and Sewerage Board for tho year was held last night, those present being Messrs H. L. Taplcy (chairman), MacManus, Mitchell, AVilsou, Hancock, Shaddock, Begg, Douglas, Longworth, and Dove. Mr AVilson, in moving tho adoption ’of tho report of tho AVorks Committee, said (ho cost of the proposed St. Andrew street and Frederick street catchment storm-water drainage works would bo £67,400. Tho whole of that amount would not bo wanted at once. Tho Hanover street work was to be started first., and the pumping portion of the job would bo done at a hiler stage. Tenders had been accepted for new plant required for tho work. In commenting on tlie report Mr MacManus said ho did not think it was a function of the board to undertake the work of constructing the concrete main storm-water conduit on the eastern side of Logan Park for the purposes of the Exhibition. He moved as an amendment that tlie following clauses in regard to authorised works bo deleted from the report;—"The laying of a 12in e.w. pipe in lien of the existing open channel in Mrs Hislop’s land: above Grey street, Northeast Valley, and across Grey street, at an estimated cost of £110.” “The construction of a, closed s.w. channel through L. Ireland’s property at No. 56 Chambers street, North-east Valley, at an estimated cost of £4O, of which amount Air Ireland is to contribute half.” Ho objected to these works because they were "piecemeal,” and not part of a definite system. Mr Mitchell seconded the amendment.

In replying to Mr Shaddock, Mr Wilson said the work to lie undertaken in the matters mentioned by Mr AlacMamts was in connection with an old drain which tho board had worked in former years. Park, the work to he undertaken would he of a- permanent nature, ami would he in lino with tho conveniences to he creeled on the park. It was up to the board to help the Exhibition Company in carrying out- permanent work.

Tho amendment was lost-, and. the report wa-s adopted. Air Taverner, in moving the adoption of tho report of the. Finance Committee, mentioned that the £67,400 for the St. Andrcw-l’ivderiek street work, would bo a. charge against the last authorised drainage Ic?an of £IOO,OOO. The report was adopted.
