ORPHANS’ PICNIC

A PLEASANT OUTING. The Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Club held its annual picnic for the children from the orphanages on Saturday at Broad Bay. Tho picnic -was in the form of a launch cruise, and at 2 p.m. sharp the following launches started from the Harbor Board's wharf landing stage:—Ngaio, Norana, Silver Fern, Aotea, Stella, Laura, Hazel, Matai, Eureka, Marewa, Rewi, and Fan. Each boat was well laden with happy, singing children, • and an excellent run was made down the harbor. Each child was presented with a bag of sweets. On arrival at Broad Bay the launches were met by officials of the Yacht Club and the Broad Bay Boating Club and the hostesses, after which the children wore taken to the various residences for afternoon tea. Afterwards they were entertained with games and music until about 4 p.m., when they were assembled at Mrs R. Hudson’s residence to receive gifts. In a few words, Commodore Sundstrum welcomed the little ones, and said ho hoped that an enjoyable afternoon had been spent by all. The children gave loud cheers for their hostesses and tho Yacht and Motor Boat- Club. They then embarked for the return journey, and. reached tho city shortly before 6 p.m. The thanks of tho Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Club are due to the owners of the launches, and also to the following hostesses :—Mrs C. Speight, Mrs R. Hudson, Mrs 0. W. Sundstrum, Mrs Nyhon, Mrs F. B. Francis, Dr Emily Nees, Mrs Alex. Begg, Mrs Martin, Mrs J. W. Gil-’ lies, Mrs T. Brooks, Mrs Couchman, Mrs Austin, Airs H. F. Nees. Messrs H. F. Nees and W. R. Waters rendered Commodore Sundstrum, his flag officers, and committee signal service in connection with the outing. The club also desires to thank those who so generously assisted in making tho afternoon a success.
