Amery emphasised the need for making Great Britain s manhood and boundless resources available in the great spaces overseas. Hitherto Britain had squandered millions in men and money in building up other nations, which during either peace or war could never be what the dominions would be. The ‘Daily Telegraph,’ commenting on the Government’s decision to proceed with tho Singapore base, savs: “Doubtless tho question of finance as between the Mother Country and the dominions will be reconsidered'. Great Britain is not in the position of the rich uncle in the fairy story.
