THE BIG EXHIBITION

COURT OF SECONDARY INDUSTRIES INCREASED SPACE WANTED. At the meeting of the committee of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association last night Mr W. R. Hayward reported upon tlje result of investigations he had made during his tour of the. dominion in regard to the secondary industries court at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition in Dunedin. Mr Hayward recalled that a committee of their, association which had been set up in connection with the matter had devised a rough working plan. The Exhibition Company would allow a rebate of 15 per cent, if block areas were taken up by such organisations as their own and administered by them. The 15 per cent, rebate would be applicable to a secondary industries court. The committee suggested that 10 per cent, should be allowed to the local associations to organise secondary industries in their various provinces; that the other 5 per cent, should be held; and, if there were any profits on the venture, that the 5 per cent, should be pooled among the associations according to the shares they had taken up. He had found tho Auckland manufacturers sympathetic, and no doubt a large number of exhibits would come from there. The Wellington manufacturers were also supporting the Exhibition proposals very well. There seemed to be no doubt that a great deal of support would bo accorded the Exhibition from most other places, as well as the main centres.

In reply to the chairman, Mr Hayward said his chief mission in tho North was in connection with courts for primary industries. Good committees in connection with the Exhibition had been set up in every centre. Tho Chairman said there seemed no doubt that considerably mpro than 33,000 square feet would be required for secondary industries. Mr Hayward i Undoubtedly wo will] Mr Speight said that the sooner the Exhibition Company knew what was required the sooner it would get a move on with the buildings required. Tho Secretary said that in a three days’ canvass applications were received for 20,000 square feet of space for secondary industries, whereas only 33,000 square feet of space was allotted. Should they not tell the Exhibition Company that they needed the whole of a bmlding instead of half ?

Mr Hayward: That will make it about 62,000 square feet. It was decided to recommend the special committee to lake steps to ascertain what space would be required.
