Can- Saunders, Professor of Social Science at Liverpool University, lecturing on tho standard of life, said that scientific investigations showed that the minimum for a family of five in Great Britain ought to be £3 2s 4d weekly, made up of 26s 3d for food, 8s lOd foi rent, 11s 3d for clothing, and 4s for fuel, leaving 12s for persona] requirements and recreation. —A. and N.Z. Cable. A LABOR MOVEMENT. TOO MANY UNIONS. LONDON, December 6. (Received December 8, at 1.20 a.m.) The General Council of tho Trade Union Congress has appointed a sub-committee to evolve a scheme for carrying out the resolution of the Hull Congress in favor of a reduction in tho number of trade unions, in order to present a united front for the improvement of the workers’ standard of life. It is hoped to reduce the 1,135 unions affiliated to the congress to fifty or less.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
