ST. CLAIR SURF BATHING CLUB
OFFICIAL OPENING. Although the weather was very threat ruing on Saturday afternoon about 1,000 people witnessed one of the most successful openings the St. Clair Life-saving and Surfing Club lias had for some years. Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P. (patron of the club)-made the opening speech Ho remarked that the sport had suffered a severe set-back by the war and some very unfavorable seasons. Last year, .however, with the return of good weather, the chib membership began to swell, and at present the prospects were quite, as bi'Hit ns t.hcv bad ever been in the his- ' tory of the ‘ club. The club members were now making themselves known _in swimming circles, and at the recent swimming carnival hold by the Dunedin Atua linir°Club wore fortunate enough to carry off some of the events. He hoped to see St. Clair members performing at the New Zealand championship carnival at Christchurch. The life-saving display by two teams was closely watched, and much appreciated. Each team consisted of seven men. No. 1 team was under the club captain, Mr C. P. Triggs; No. 2 team was directed by Mr J. Hindoo. The procedure prescribed for such a demonstration was gone right through. A patient went into the water, and then surrendered himself to the life-saving process, being brought ashore with tho line and put thiough the resuscitating movements. Tho surf-board competition was cut out, the weather being too cold for men to bo standing about on the beach. A number of races for children were got off. Prizes wore donated by R. Hudson and Co., Speight, Justice, and Co., the Phamix Company, Mr T. H. Walker, and air H. Hall, whilst air A. Dickie lout the sacks for the sack races. Mr 11. H. Henderson (president) and all tho members of the executive who took part in the management are to bo congratulated on the success of the function 3 , specially on the punctuality, which enabled the proceedings to end at 4.45.
