WINTON RACES. SECOND DAY. [Special to the ‘Stab/] INVERCARGILL, December 4,_ ' The second day’s racing was held in fine but threatening weather, and, though rain appeared to be falling all round the district, only a few drops fell on the course. The attendance was below the usual for the second day, only £298 being taken at the gates. Punters again had the worst of the deal, ns favorites had a bad spin, and this no doubt helped to keep down the totalisator investments, which were £12,812, as compared . with £15,199 last year, and making a total of £27,5561for the meeting—a- decrease of The course was again very hard, but the racing was fairly interesting, though much of the interest attached to the Steeplechase was robbed by five of the seven starters falling. None of the riders or horses was seriously hurt. All started in the County Hack Handicap, 7f, and Soldier’s Hope was at once selected as favorite, carrying more than Obligio, the other starters being Fairy Ring, Navy Cut, Solvency, Highborn, and Marconigram. When the rose Highburn hung a little, and Marconigram (on tho rails) led Navy Cut, Obligio, and Soldier’s Hope into tho back stretch, where Navy Cut took charge, and led Obligio and Soldier’s Hope round the far turn. Approaching the home turn, both Soldier s Hope and Obligio were done with, and Navy Cut, running wide, let Solvency through on the rails inside the distance post. Highburn put in a good run, and, outstaying the others, beat Solvency home by a head, with Navy Cut a neck away third, followed by Marconigram _ and Obligio. In the Orcti Harness Trot, 11m, Deepstream was withdrawn, and Rosedalo went out better hacked than Lennmhor, Four Bells and The Sheik being well supported. The other starters wei’e First Glance, John Logan, Kentucky Direct, Landlady, Bonny Boy, Cardinal and Blue, Lady Joffre. Carillon, and Bonanza. Carillon and Landlady lost anv chances they mar have had at the start, and Four Bells, First Glance, and Rosedalo went away well. First Glance led Four Bells and Rose dak passing the stand at the end of half a mile. First Glance broke going into the back stretch, but settling down quickly was soon in charge again. Rosedalo dropped out beforo going a mile, and The Sheik and Kentucky Direct moved up fast round the far bend. Racing to the sh’aight, First Glance, Four Bells, The Sheik._ and Kentucky Direct were' almost in line. The Sheik led into the straight from Kentucky Direct, and stayed on to win easily;by three length' from KentuckvA’Direct, First Glance eight lengths further back, fullowed by Bormio Bov, John Boffin, and Lmiamhor. Cniickshank, driver of First Glance, bad interfered with Four Bells’s chance by boring on to him, _and the. Angelo led into the straight from Listening Post, hut when heads were in line for tho post the latter took charge, and won comfortably by half a length. Happy Warrior, on the vails, and Cupidou led' into the straight, -with Andante on the outside of thenu Then Fra-n----caiao came fast, and, ditching 'them inside the distance-post, won by a length and a-qnarter from Cupidou, .who beat Happy Warrior by half a length. Persuader was tho only withdrawal from tho Steeplechase, about 2jm, and _ Sherlock, who had been risen 131 b for his previous day’s win, was sent out better backed then Greenstone, who had been purchased by Mr Mm. Baird, and ran in his colors. Polthogue was the only other well backed, and the other starters were Hollow Log, I si a Bank, Mettle Drift, and Nimrod. Greenstone led to the first fence of tho stand double, but at the second fence tried to run off, and nenrly took Isla Bank with him. ’I hen Hollow Log and Sherlock took charge, and were joined by Greenstone, Isla Bank falling. Greenstone led Sherlock and Polthogue along the back, Nimrod falling at tho next fence, and Mettle Drift at the next, the log fence. Greenstone showed the wny oyer tho next throe fences, but, after crossing the stand double, Polthogue took charge, and just led Sherlock and Greenstone over the sod wall. Sherlock went up to Polthogue, and Greenstone fell at the logs, leaving the other pair over a furlong in front of Hollow Log. At the last fence Sherlock fell, leaving Polthogue to win by the length of the straight from Hollow Log. Sherlock was remounted by an onlooker, and gained third money. Time, smin Ssec. Totalisator investments, £1,161*. All started in the Awarua Hack Handicap, 6f, and Mountain Rose was at once installed favorite, carrying more than Soltoe, tho next best backed. The other starters were Bright Mark, Gay Gauntlet, Salerno, Caularie., Winkle, and Blue Dragoon. From a good start Soltoe, Gay Gauntlet, and 1 Bright Mark were in front until nearing the home turn, _ where Soltoo retired beaten, and Bright Mark raced alongside Gay Gauntlet, and .it the distance-post Blue Dragoon put in a claim in a good finish. Bright Mark beat her stable-mate, Blue Dragoon, by half a length, with Gay Gauntlet a similar distance away third, followed by Caularia and Soltoe. Time, Imin 16 l-sscc. Totalisator investments, £1,566^ Erin Chimes was withdrawn from the Dosh Saddle Trot, Ijm, and, despite their previous failures, Oakland and J azolock were made good first and second favorites, the other starters being Trysoon, Miss Adonis, Landlady, May Tracey, Tepeka, Chiming Child, Catriona, Greenhank, Moor Chimes, and Trusty Child. Jazolock, Miss Adonis, and Oakland all lost ground at tho stapt, from which Tepeka, Trusty Child, Landlady, and Trysoon were the leaders at tho end of two furlongs. Landlady took charge going into the bock stretch from Tepeka, Trusty Child, and Trysoon, but at tho far turn the, latter ran past, and led Landlady, Tepeka, and Trusty Child into the straight, and appeared to ho winning easily, but inside the- distance-post struck herself, and, in a good finish, Tepeka led her home by a length; Landlady was five lengths away third, followed by Trusty Child and Catriona. The withdrawals from the Farewell Handicap, 7f, were Francaiso and Avispado, and tho betting resolved-itself into a duel between Valdamo'and Monoxide. The leniently-handicapped Heather _ Lad, who had the'minimum weight, was third selection, and the other starters were King Sol, Pady’s Hope, Coastguardd, Soldier’s Prido, Calibration, and Thistlecrown.
