STRANGE DISAPPEARANCE OF

AIRMEN.

It is learnt that the Government views the Iraq situation with grave concern. Tho raiders numbered 5,000. A dozen aeroplanes flew low pouring out bursts of machine gun, the Are breaking up and demoralising tho invaders. Air patrols on the frontier continue ceaselessly. An .armored car company, based at Mosul, is available if required. One of the most remarkable episodes in the history of aviation occurred at Iraq, whenj Flight-lieutenant Day and Pilot Stuart mysteriously disappeared. They set out for'Shaibah aerodrome, and did not return, and an exhaustive search revealed their plane undamaged, with a supply of petrol, but abandoned, in a lonely part of the desert. There was no sign ""of the occupants. The absence of tracks in the neighborhood precludes the possibility of neighboring tribes having carried off tho officers. — 1 Sun ’ Cable.

INDIA’S COMMUNAL STRIFE

GHANOI'S FAST,

DELHI, September 26.

Received September 27, at 12.45 p.m.) The leaders of all communities will assemble at Delhi to-day to devise means to end the communal strife which is strangling all efforts for political and social progress, and has caused within recent weeks appalling loss of life and property in riots all over the country. Momentarily Lucknow and Shaltjehanpnr are under the control of British troops _to prevent Hindus and Mohammedans flying at each other’s throats. Tho chief business of the conference is to discuss a proposal that a body of religious leaders be constituted to control communities and decide questions affecting the religious rights and privileges of each community. _ Gandhi is now on the ninth day of his fast, and is medically reported to be weak and unable to sit up. To-day was observed as a day of mourning throughout India. All Hindus and Mohammedans have joined in the fast in sympathy, and the result has been that the markets and shops are closed, and the European population is experiencing difficulty in purchasing food.—‘ Sun ’ Cable.
