In view of the sculling race, Hannan versus Arnst, fixed for October 25, on the Waikato River, a controversy has arisen in reference to the claim for the Australasian title. To-day, _Mr G. Ceruti, as honorary secretary, publishes a letter from the New South Wales Sculling League which, in effect, confirms the cable message claiming M’Devitt as the Australasian champion. Hannan, in reply, refers to Mr H. deal’s published interview on behalf of the Auckland committee controlling the Hannan-M'Devitt race on the Waitemata, in which Cleal states that M'Devitt admitted, after Hannan had beaten him, that Hannan was the champion. Mr Cleal, in closing the interview, said he would like to inform Mr Ceruti, who has been in Auckland, that an able and reputable body was in existence, and quite capable of the Australasian championships without Mr Ceruti’s assistance.

OLYMPIC GAMES. INTERESTING NEW ZEALAND. [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 11. With the object of arousing the enthusiasm of New Zealanders in future Olympic Games, Mr J. W. Heenan addressed the'New Zealand Amateur Athletic Asso' elation. He maintained that the festival was now well established, and criticised those who attempted to show tliat the Games caused ill-feeling between nations. The Games really tended to breed a better understanding among competing peoples. Regrettable “incidents had occurred, but these had ’gradually become less noticeable, and finally would disappear. He urged all clubs in the dominion to support the movement to raise funds to send teams to the Olympic Games.

LADIES’ HOCKEY. CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY. NELSON, September 11. At the dinner tendered the champion Southland ladies’ hockey team last evening by Mr H. R. Duncan (patron of the Nelson Association) Mr S. Kirkpatrick (president) announced that be would donate a fifty-guinea, silver cup, to bo called the K. Clip, in place of the present one, which was already filled with winners’ names. DONCASTER ST.
