NORTH-EAST HARBOR NOTES

[From Our Correspondent.] For sotne_ considerable time past tin* formation of a. tennis club and the construction of the necessary courts havo been engaging the attention of the Young Men’s Club. With the steadyq influx of residents the need of some such form of athletic pleasure has become more apparent to the members. With a view to seeing what could bo done in the matter a public meeting was called for last Wednesday evening in the ball. Despite counterattractions there was a good attendance of those interested, including a number of ladies. Mr J. Brown (president of the \ ming Men’s Club) presided, and expressed bis pleasure at the large attendance, which augured well for the success of the undertaking. They all recognised the need for tennis courts at Macandrews, and, judging by the promised support, it should not bo long before the -scheme was a reality. Mr Gregory said that- there were several sites under consideration, and he felt certain a suitable otto could be procured. He moved that a club be formed to foster the game of lawn tennis, and to lease or acquire land upon which to maintain tennis courts; and, further, tiiat the original membership of the club he those present who signify their willingness to join. Mr Brickell seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The following provisional committee was set up to go into the matter and report to another general meeting Messrs Brickell, Brown,_ Gregory (convener), Xivon, Rattray, Riddell, Mrs Elliott, Misses Brockman, Emanuel, and M'Aulev.

The present season of the Card Club is on the, eve of finishing. The club has, indeed, had a successful season, the interest and sociability of the members being kept up right through. Next Tuesday evening the wind-up will take place, when (he various prizes will be distributed to the successful membors. An invitation has been extended to the members of the Broad Bay Club to. visit Macandrews on the first ‘Tuesday in_ September for the purpose of indulging iu a friendly contest at cards. In the past these social visits have been exchanged between the two clubs, and the local members are looking' forward to the forthcoming one with A good deal of pleasure. On Saturday evening next the distribution of the pvjzes in connection with the recent school competitions will take place in the hall The function will take the form of a concert, the prize-winners at the competitions providing the entertainment. The committee has decided to give each competition a prize, so that they will have more than a passing interest in the proceedings. Supper will be provided, and a dance will bo held after the concert.

With the object ot' wiping off the exist* ing debt on the ball, the Improvement Society is going to run a garden fete in Mr P. Barling’s lovely grounds on Labor Day. As a result of the previous gah( day, the society is in tho position of having only a small amount owing on the building, and it is hoped that this will be lijjuid;<ted by the proposed effort on Labor Day. The society has in view some necessary improvements to the hall, such as the lining of the interior, alteration of the stage facilities, and several other matters, and no doubt when completed they* will he much appreciated by performers and public alike. The football match between the married and single members of the Young Men’s Club will take place in Harris’s paddock on Saturday afternoon. There is goodnatured rivalry between tho two teams, anjjl each is confident of “ downing ” the other. Following are tho players:—Married : L. Gardner, J. Brown, W. Hazlowood, A. MTlntchon, A. Bewley, C. Marrett, H. Deliver, A. Harris. The Single Men have received a challenge for a game from the Top Road. The fancy dress dance organised by the Ladies’ Committee of the Improvement Society took place in the hall on Saturday evening last, and was a decided success in every way. The hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion with flags, evergreens, hunting, lanterns, etc., it being evident that the members of the committee had spared no pains in the matter of time and labor in tins direction. The hall was tilled to overflowing_ with a merry throng, who were there in ail styles and colors of garments. The success and enjoyment of the gathering was greatly added to by the excellent music supplied by the Maori Jazz Band, this party being very popular with such gatherings “ down the Bay.” The adult prizes were awarded to Miss Spicer (Seventeenth Century) and Mr Desmoulins (domestic cat), and tho juvenile prizes were awarded to the Churchill twins (Red Indians). Towards tho close of tho function Mr G. Morris, in the unavoidable absence of tho president, extended tho society’s thanks to the Ladies' Committee for the very excellent and successful evening’s enjoy-, merit provided. Refreshments were dispensed by willing hands, end tho gathering dispersed before midnight. An alteration Is being made in the daily arrival and departure of the mail. Instead of arriving here in tho afternoon, as formerly, it will arrive at 8.15 a.m.. Broad Bay 8.30 a.m., and depart at 4.45 p.m., and Broad Bay 4.30 p.m. This departure should be an advantage, as it means that the mail can he received and answered the same day when desired, aa well as saving the children from waiting after school hours for delivery.
