PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Council last night was attended by the mayor (Mr J. Watson), Crs Anderson, Smith, Cable, M'Lachlan, Asher, Love, Borrie, Allen, Lunn, and Dodds. A circular letttcr gave particulars of the big forthcoming Exhibition in Dunedin. — Received. , The Minister of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of tho Motor Bill.—-The town manager said all the fees went to the Government, but it was a fair proposition that a proportion, say ■25 per cent., bo refunded to local bodies for local roads. Of the 5s drivers’ fee tho local body had to pay Is of it into flic Post Office. Cars should be registered in tho ■district in which they were kept. Port Chalmers would probably have to pay £IOO per annum in motor fees.—Cr Anderson thought the council should go further, and claim a refund of 59 per cent. The Dnncdin-Port road was a case in point where repairs were needed, but no fees available for that purpose.—Cr Borrie supported a 50-50 basis.—Cr Lunn said that otherwise the borough would get nothing whatever out of the motor fees collected in the town.—lt was decided to send a, remit to tha.t effect to the Municipal Association, also to direct attention to West, Harbor’s case in regard to tlio Duiicclin-Port road.' Mr J. M. Dickson, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister of Railways expressing regret that, as an extension in tho present system of suburban railway fares would involve a heavy loss of revenue, extension of the system could not therefore he granted.-—Tho town manager said this letter was in response to representations recently made by the council. Ho pointed out that Ihe letter emphasised tho fact (hat suburban fares were instituted for the purpose of inducing city people to reside in the suburbs. The suburban system was not peculiar to New Zealand, but was in operation elsewhere. —Letter received. The Town Clerk, Maslcrlon, wrote asking the council to appoint a delegate to support a deputation to the Minister of Public Works in Wellington in regard to powers held by hydro-electric boards to specially rate non-consumers. —Resolved to asli Mr J- M, Dickson to represent tho council on the deputation. REPORTS. The Works Committee reported;—The foreman reports having finished the wall, filled in the bank, and straightened the fence in front of section 193, Wickliffe terrace; graded tho road at William-street and corner of Coombs Hay terrace; laid 4ft of 9in drain to cany off ihe. storm water, and carted and spread ashes; ho was waiting for the truck of metal to come to hand to finish the roadway. The tip had been straightened up and notices served on all persons making use- of it that rubbish must be tipped over the edge or where directed by the foreman. Tho Finance Committee reported that the receipts amounted to £235 6s 3d, and expenditure to £77 4s Bd. Report adopted. . , . , The Reserves Committee reported that its attention had been called to the state of tho roof iron on the old down Hall, which was badly in need of painting, and, as tho lease did not provide for this work being done by the lessee, the committee would recommend that tho council arrange for it to bo done, when the building is being repainted, in terms of the lease. Report adopted. The Gas and Water recommended payment of accounts totalling £26 Os 4d. The manager had reported everytiling going well a-t ths ’works. Purt of his own and stoker’s time had been, occupied during the fortnight in overhauling and repairing the main, and fourteen hours were spent laying new services to two houses in Harrington street.
