CLEANING UP

ALBANY FOLLOWS PHILADELPHIA’S EXAMPLE.

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright

NEW YORK, May 5,

A telegram from Albany says that, emulating the example of Philadelphia, Albany lias engaged a military officer to clean up the municipality, which is charged with being vice-stricken. Albany is the capital of New York Stale, and when the Legislature ended its session last week it is alleged that tho legislators indulged in a last-moment orgy in which liquor flowed freely. Roulette, faro, and pool rooms, where race-track betting occurs, exist within a few squares of the Capitol building in the so-called “red-light” district, and special hotels for the legislators are conveniently located. Tho mayor (Mr Hncketl) declared that the police were inefficient and corrupt, and the force will be thoroughly reformed and the bootleggers driven out of the city. Numerous arrests have already occurred, and tho bootleggers who operate from the Canadian border, making Albany the centre of their activities, have been warned to stay outside the city limits.— A. and N.Z. Cable.
