PICNICS

SARGOOD’S EMPLOYEES. The annual picnic of Sargood’s employees was held at Waihola on Saturday, when there were about 400 present. A very enjoyable day was spent, toys and sweets being provided for the children, and an excellent programme of sporting events was carried out. Mr D. MLMillan acted as starter, and Messrs H. Skinner, G. Wills, and J. Dixon as judges. At the conclusion of the sports Mr H. Skinner presented the prizes. The following are tho results: Sargood’s Handicap.—L. Quest 1, L. Blagdon 2, A. Clark 3. Between forty and fifty decorated motor lonics conveyed over 1,000 people to Brighton ou Saturday,to tho Otago drivers’ annual picnic, which was held on the domain. To, sugar, milk, and hot water were provided, and plenty of sweets, toys, and fruit were distributed among tho young ones, while a big programme of races was provided for the elder children. Tho tramway employees’ annual picnic at Ross Point, yesterday was attended by 3,200 people, and a most delightful time was spent. The picnickers were conveyed by the Feny Company’s steamers, and everything was provided for comfort and enjoyment. The Tramway Band was in attendance. The Picnio Committee thanks the various firms and individual donors who gave so generously to the prize fund. Various sports and racing events were held, and attracted big entries. The little folk were not forgotten, sweets and 1 fruit being generously dispensed. ARTISTS' PICNIC. A considerable number of artists journeyed to Smaill’s Beach, Tomahawk, on Saturday. Although the prevailing wind was somewhat adverse to their trying their artistic abilities in this beauty spot, many' photographers and oil and water color artists were busy, and the results obtained by the latter were beyond expectations. Tho conveners (Messrs F. R. Brown, J. W. Brock, and G. Chance) spared no effort iu making tho field day a success. Late in tho afternoon, after indulging in artistic pursuits, the Indies and gentlemen present showed their athletic skill by holding a series of races. A number of handsome prizes were donated for tho various events. Tho races were keenly contested throughout. Air Brown, iu making the presentation of the prizes, casually remarked that if the young artists who had competed rnado as rapid strides in art as they had shown in their athletic advancement, in his opinion there was no reason why gome of them should not become 11. or A.R.A.’s—at least, that should be their ideal. Tho council of tho Dunedin Public Art Gallery 'Society was represented at the picnic by Air D. E. Theonain. BUTCHERS. Tho butchers’ annual picnic was held at Hinkley’s Bay to-day, and was well attended, tlie party leaving Dunedin by the 9.20 boat. A good progTamme of sporting events was provided, tbc'fe being races lor men, women, and children. There were fruit, sweets, and toys in abundance for tlie small children, and sugar, milk, and hot wafer was provided for everybody. The baby show was a feature ■of the picnic, tho entries being exceptionally large. Smith’s string band was in attendance.
