AT BALMACEWEN. A bogey competition played on Balmacewen Links this afternoon resulted in a tie between J. G. Dick, H. L. Cook, and H. W. Slater, with scores of 1 up. The best cards were:— Hep. J. G. Dick 5 1 up H. L. Cook 8 1 up H. \V. Slater 12 1 up 11. W. Bundle 10 nil square S. K. Sleigh 4 1 down G. T. Dawson 5 1 down ST. CLAIR CLUB. A bogey match was played on the St. Clair Links, when very few good cards were returned. The following were tho best scores;—F. Morion (handicap 10), 3 up; G. Lyttelton (handicap 14), 3 up; C. B. Wight (handicap plus 1), all square. GROSS-GOUHTRY CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY CAVERSHAM TEAM. J. W. TAPP, CHAMPION. Tho fifteenth annual Five-mile Crosscountry Championship of Otago was decided at Wingatui under the control of the Otago Centre, N.Z.A.A.A. The course was very heavy, but the weather was ideal for running. Starting opposite the grand stand, the course led along the track over tho sod wall and the post-and-raiis. Here a break was made into the open country leading up tho hill in Mr Bolting's properly. From here the trail led in a westerly direction across the paddocks near Mr Hazlett’s property, coming out on tho Janefield road. The road was followed for about half a mile, and then through Mr Gow’s property, which included a good deal of ploughed land, coming on to the racecourse at tho half-mile post. This course was followed twice, and the - race could) ho seen from the grand stand for the greater part of the distance.

Some thirty-three runners, representing six clubs, faced the starter, the Cargill Road only starting four mon, and the ’Varsity starting one man short. At the sod wall Mount, Beatson, M’Kernan, and Tapp were leading. Going up the hill m Bolting’s paddock tho pace steadied down considerably, the leaders being White, Tapp, Mount, Frye, Hobbs, and Erridgo. Through Hazlett’s paddocks tho going was very heavy, hut on the Jane-field road the pace was faster. Turning into Gow’s paddock tho order was Frye, Tapp, White, Erridgo,, Bibby, Henderson, Boateon. Cox, and Hobbs. A track through tho ploughed paddock made things easier, and coming on to the racecourse the order waa.Eryo, Tapp, White, Erridgo, Bibby, Beatson, Cox, Hobbs. Monaghan, Paterson. Passing the grand stand, tho leaders were Frye, Tapp, White, Bibby, Erridgo, Beatson, Henderson, Hobbs, Cox, Monaghan, and Paterson. At tiio sod wall the second time round tho order was unchanged, except that White (St. Patrick’s) retired.

Going through Bolting’s paddock, the order was: Frye, Tapp. Bibby, Erridge, Henderson, Hobbs, and Beatson, with the two leaders well in front. The rest of the field was strung out for nearly a mile. Entering the racecourse, Frye ’still led Tapp, with Bibby, Hobbs, Erridge, Beatson, Henderson, Cox, and Monaghan following in that order. Frye led till will.Tn 200yds from homo, when a, great struggle ensued between him and Tapp. Tapp lasted the better, and warn a well-judged race by 15yds, with Bibby some 200yds further back third, the next three men bunched some distance away. Anglican (scratch), 52 4 As the Caversham won the teams race, the sealed handicap coos to the University Club. THE RUNNERS. J. W. Tapp, the winner, lias been running well this season. He finished second in the Edmond Cup, and won the Caversham Championship last Saturday. C. W. Frye, who finished second, is one of the best-known distance runners in Otago. His best performance was in 1920, when he won the New Zealand cross-country championship at Christchurch. J. B.
