MAYOR'S APPEAL
FOOD AND CLOTHES WANTED. DIRECTORY OF RELIEF. The mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas) and the town clerk (Mr Lewin) were out till midnight on Sunday arranging for such relief as they could. Mr "Douglas has been inundated with offers of assistance. This morning ho organised a relief committee, and those who desire to lend aid should do so through one of the following departmental heads whom he appointed : Salvation Army (food, clothes, beds), Ensign Coombs. Old Post Office (kitchen and relief bureau), Rev. Bryan King and Rev. G. E. Moreton. Hotels, Mr A. Paape. Private homes, Mr 0. Todd. Social service. Miss Runciman. Transport, Mr Halliday (Otago Motor Club). Tho above, with the mayor, Mr J. W. Dove (Mayor of St. Kilda), and Mr T. Somerville,* form the. Central Committee. Tho home science students, under Professor Strong, have food for fifty, and can find beds for a certain number of women and children; and the Methodist Central Mission is also providing food. The Drill Hall has 2ft of water in it, but Captain Hunt can find accommodation for sufferers in rooms upstairs. The mavor appeals for supplies of food and clothing, which are urgently needed, and should be sent to the old Post Office or the Salvation Army headquarters, lie is further looking into the position, having under consideration the opening of a relief fund. An offer has been mado by Mr P. Braithwaite to put on picture shows at the Octagon, the Plasa, and the King Edward Theatres on Anzac Night, the whole, of tho proceeds to bo given to the fund for the relief of the flooded-out people.
