ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

BRIGADE MEMBERS’ INVESTITURE. BY LORD JELLICOE. The Governor-General went to the Town Hall last night to invest with their honors e ; ght members of the Otago district of the St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas. His Excellency was accompanied by Viscountess Jellieoe, and attended by the mayor (Mr J. S. Dougins), Mr J. J. Clark (president of the Dunedin Centro), and Captain Monday. The following is a list of thoso who were invested : HONORARY SERVING BROTHERS. Major W. Fleming.. Mr P. W. Breen. HONORARY SERVING SISTERS. Miss C. Mackersy. (Mrs G. M. Davis. Miss M. W. Mills-. Miss A. M. Andrew. DONAT. Mrs Grigg. SERVICE MEDAL (12 YEARS). Miss M. L. Wylie. His Excellency said he did not think that the general public was sufficiently aware of the great importance of the work done by the St. John Ambulance Association. The society was rather inclined to hide its light under a bushel. He noticed In the report for 1921 that attention was called to the desirability of more propaganda work on behalf of the association; hut its real advertisement lay in tho uniform of thoso who were to he scon at ali public gatherings throughout tho Empire. Ho also noticed from tho report that 1,400 oases of accident had been dealt with during the year 1921. This work represented only a small proportion of tho work of members, a great part of their duties being concerned with tho in-struction-of people in the rendering of first ■aid. His Excellency tendered his congratulations to tho Dunedin Centro upon tho success of Sister Dawson at tho Tim am competitions in 182(1, and he also congratulated the local centre on tho fact that so many of tho principal officers of tho association came from Dunedin. At the head of these was Colonel Barclay, whoso absence that evening ho regretted very much, and more particularly the cause of that absence. It gave him great pleasure to see present so many members of tho brigade, and especially so many of tho nursing sisters; and, if time permitted, ho would like to have the privilege of ehaking hands with them, but ho hoped they would take the will for the deed. His Excellency added that on the nest occasion when ho had a (similar duty to perform he would place it in the hands of viscountess Jclliooe, bcoauso Her Excellency Lad a better knowledge of pins than ho had. On behalf of the brigade, Major Fleming thanked His Excellency for his presence and for his kindness In bestowing the decorations, and three hearty cheers were given for His Excellency and Lady Jellieoe.
