MUNICIPAL WORKS

PROGRAMME FOR A DECADE. NEARLY HALF A MILLION TO BE SPENT. The Works Committee of the City Council has prepared a schedule of _ works which should be completed within the next ten years. Their estimated cost is £433,323. This is interesting when it is announced that the last of the £175,000 public works loan will be spent during the current financial year. The works include : The permanent paving of the Anderson Bay road (Cumberland street to Princes street), Bond street, Crawford street, Cumberland street (Water street to Anderson Bay road), Dowling street (adjoining Princes street), Frederick street (King street to George street), George street (parts that are failing, and Albany street to St. David street], Hanover street (King street to Filled street), King street (to Gardens), Maclaggan street (to Clarke’ street), Moray place (Princes street to Library), Princes street (parts that are failing), Rattray street (Wharf street to Coates crescent), St. Andrew street (Cumberland street to Filled street), King Edward street' (M'Bridc street to Bay View road), Cargill road (Cargill's Corner to Kew). Provision is made for the extension of Mailer street, Mornington, and half the cost of Harbor Board roads on the, reclaimed land.

The committee recommends that the whole question be referred to tHe incoming council to determine what portion ot the proposed cost of £433,000 should be submitted as a loan proposal to the ratepayers during the year. It is considered that to do anything approaching justice to tho whole area, a yearly expenditure of about £17,000 is required, this sum to he in addition to the expenditure on permanent paving and any special work such as the extension of Mailer street. Probably authority should bo sought to raise about half the amount for expenditure in, say, five or six years.
