ROWING

[By Cunjceb.] —Regatta. Dates.— February 3.—lnvercargill. February 9-—Oitago Rowing Association (Dunedin). Feb run ry. —dir istchu rcl i Bega Its. There are still several regattas ahead of local oarsmen. Tbo Otago Bowing Association';; .anitmal regatta is to bo held at Dunedin on (February 9, and it is hoped to see liberal entries from all dulba. The contests at, tho recent Macajidraw’e Bay and Broad Bay regattas 'were all very close, and if consistent training is kept up some excellent races should bo witnessed. Crows will have a. further opportunity at ■&« Queenstown, regatta, which is expected to be held, as usual, at Easter -time. With tho idea of giving an impetus to tho sport .in Oamn.ru, where for various reasons it has fallen on evil days, a gala day is to bo hold thc.ro on Saturday, January 27. Crows from the two Dunedin and the two Fort Chalmers clubs will take part, ami it is expected that Tim am will also’send some representatives. The programme includes races tor maiden fours, Ipcn fours, double sculls, and pairs. Visiting oarsmen are to bo entertained at a social in tho evening. Tho programme lor the Otago Bowing regatta cm February 9 (during Carnival Week) has been arranged, and will bo issued shortly. On tho same day tho annual interprovincial fours raco between crews representative of Otago and Southland will be rowed for the Edmond Shield. Tho trophy is at present held byOtago. Toe success of tho Otago Clulb’e maiden four tit both Broad Bay and Macandrcw's Bay was tho result of bard and consistent tramii!". Much credit is duo to Mr T. Wheelwright, who worked energetically in training tho members of the crow. The following crews have been selected ■to represent tbo Queen’s Drive Boating Club at tbo Carnival Week regatta, to bo held at Dunedin on February 9: Youths’ fours—W. Clifford (stroke), B. Soutcr, If. Clifford, F. Holden (bow); youths’ pairs—W. Clifford (stroke), H. Clifford (bow); youths’ sculls—L. Fountain, J. M'Gregor (bow); maiden fours— J. Carey (stroke); N. Thomson, C. Rose, C. Watson (bow); maiden pairs—J. Carey (Stroke), C. Rose (bow); maiden, sculls— F. Wilson, (stroke), H. Pritchard (bow) ; junior fours—F.' Wilson (stroke), H. Pritchard, S. Rusbatch, J. Yaw Year’s Day- was gala day for Marlborough, and Piotoni was the Mecca to which not only rowing enthusiasts, but holiday-makers ” also, made pilgrimage. The numbers present constituted a record for that part oi the district. Tbo weather was in one of its tantalising moods, everything in turn and nothing long—though, generally speaking, it declared itself in favor of the rowers. Tho arrangements and tho carrying of them out reflected the greatest credit on all tho officials, and loft nothing to bo desired. Tbo Wellington representatives alt the Bluff regatta (says tho ‘Dominion ’), whore tho Now Zealand championships were hold under conditions iby no means favorable to rowing, found tho best of tho other provinces far too good for them. Neither in tho single sculls championship nor tho double sculls championship were the Wfellinftoniana at any time in tho picture. This fact must give local enthusiasts food for thought as to the why and tbo wherefore of things. The Christinas and Now Year season. is always regarded as the most opportune time on which to hold regattas (says the ‘Dominion’). There were three sudh— Lyttelton, Pictom and Bluff—all of them of interest io Wellington clubs, oven on those occasions when they are not represented. But this time Wellington, by

reason of the performances of tha representatives from the Stax Boating Club, has every reason to congratulate itself on the successes obtained at tho Picton regatta. That club sent six teams to Picton, securing/three firsts, two seconds, and one third. Tho condition of tbo men, especially of those of them who underwent a week’s camping, was cicplkmt. Tho majority of the races in which they were engaged were hard-fought ones, yet they showed Tittle sign of their strenuous efforts on reaching tho finishing post. Tbo members of tbo crews cannot speak too highly of the efforts of tbo residents of Pictotn to make their stay a, most on joyable one. Tho Picton Club captain, Mr A. Perano, did a great deal to give tbo visitors a time of unqualified delight ;Jnd good-fellowship.
