PORT CHALMERS NOTES
Two albatrosses nested on Taiaroa Head 'this year, and as nobody had heard of albatrosses doing so previously some local interest was taken in the birds. Sheep approaching J-he nest were driven off by the mother bird uttering hoarse cries and snapping her beak threateningly. One egg was laid, and the place was visited by eight or ten other albatrosses. A general .nesting was looked forward to, but the 'birds forsook the place when a man oame along and robbed the nest. It ia proposed to protect (the Head against any, similar depredations against nesting seaJbirds.
At tlie quarterly meeting of tho Chalmers Licensing Committee to-day the transfer of the license of the Terminus Hotel. Outrain, from William Milne to Michael James 'Cunningham was granted. At tho Port Chalmers Court to-day Mr Bartholomew, S.M., gave judgment by default in the case of J. E. Hatcher (Porto■’hello) v. R. Reha; claim £9 la, with costa (265) and solicitor’s tee (£1 Is). Discontent in respect to closing the Port Chalmers Post Office from 8 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. does not seem to be decreasing as the months go by. It seems to be increasing. The latest addition to the chorus of resentment ia the protest of the daily fanners of the surrounding districts who make Port Clmlmeis their railway and postal centre. Tho dairymen are early risers, and often drive into Port Chalmers to the 8 a.m. train, and sometimes to the 7 a.m. train. In order to kill two birds with the one 'eft'oii, the mail for tho neighborhood is taken back. When the Post Office opened at 8 o’clock it was jus! the order of things, and accepted as suoli. But now that tlie Post Office does not open until 9 ».m., there is a long wait and considerable growling. A (farmer after doing his hour’s wait this morning said the Post Office seemed to he going to the dogs altogether these days. There was no saying, but the next move would be. to close it all week and keep open on Sundays.
