MARIE LLOYD. FAMOUS MUSICAL COMEDY ACTRESS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, October 8. (Received October 9, at 9 a.m.) The death is announced of Miss Mario Lloyd. (Received October 9, at 11.30 a.m.) The newspapers pay a tribute to Miss Marie Lloyd as the greatest artist on the variety stage. They describe her as an impulsive and generous-hearted woman, who. despite the fact that she was earning from £3OO to £4OO weekly, was always in debt, owing to her extravagance and kindness to the needy. [Marie . Lloyd (Matilda Alice Victoria Lloyd), the distinguished comedienne, was born in London in 1870. She made her first appearance on the stage at the Royal Eagle Music Hall, under the name of Bella Delmere, in 1885, but a month later her own name figured in the bills for the first time at the same hall. She quickly made good, and appeared regularly in musical plays in Great Britain, and also paid visits to America, South Africa, and Australia, but sho did not come to New Zealand. She retained her position at the head of her profession right up to tho time of her death. He obtained some legal experience in Edinburgh, and became managing clerk to Smith, Anderson, and Co., Dunedin, in 1869. Ho passed) Iris barrister’s examination at Wellington in 1877. Returning to Dunedin, he was manager of the common law and conveyancing department for Sievwright and Stout for five years. He commenced to practise here in 1879. In his active days ho was a very enthusiastic rose grower.
