SATURDAY’S HARRIERS
EDMOND CUP STEEPLECHASE. CAVERSHAM WINS. The Dunedin Harrier Club decided its annual race, the Edmond Cup Steeplechase, on Forbnry Park. The conditions were ideal for tho race, which was witnessed by, a fair number of spectators. Tho event attracted fifty-seven competitors, comprising six teams representative of the following harrier clubs :— Anglican, Pacific, Caversham, St. Hilda, Civil Service, and St. Patrick’s. Commencing with two laps over several obstacles on the track, the course then led out on to tho Victoria road and along tho beach wall: to St. Hilda. Hero it turned back on to Victoria road, thence to the racecourse, where it finished with a final lap on the track. Under tho direction of the referee (Mr W. F. Edmond) tho officials worked energetically. The judges were Messrs T. I. . Brickeli, A. Cannon, W. J. Bonnet, A. Melville, and B. H. Eosovcar; track stewards—G. T. Thompson, P. Romeril, E. Thompson, and G. Jackson; starter, P. Romeril. The field got away well, and it was not long before Beat-son (Caversham) went out into the lead. At tho endof the first lap the leaders were commencing to draw away, with Bcatson still first. Leaving tho racecourse tho order was Beatson, Erye, Aslibv, and Lister. Tho going on tho “beach walk suited the leaders, and tho pace now was fairly solid. Hill (Pacific.) was beginning to make up ground, and displaced Frye for fourth position. Lister was running well here, and nearing tho battery ho passed Beatson. Tho field now was well strung out, and tho first six runners had established a decisive lead. Entering Victoria road Beatson was endeavoring to hang on to Lister. , who appeared to be running with, great ease. Fryo was lying third, with Hill and' Ashlby handy.' This order was retained on to the track, but Lister had gained on Beatson, whom ho was leading by a few yards. These two gained ground right on to the tape, Lister covering tho final lap with ease, eventually leading Beatson by 12yds. Fryo kept ahead of Hill, and gained a few yards on the track, finishing some 25yds ahead of the Pacific runner. Results: —-Individual. — D. C. Lister (Civil Sendee), 16min 33sec. J. Amongst the spectators were three member’s of the Wellington Harriers (Messrs Cook, Lovitt. and Vflhittakcr), who were closely watching the progress of the race in view of the dominion championship next Saturday. After the Edmond Cup race tho St. Hilda Harriers were entertained. by Mr and Mrs J. Dove, the Mayor and Mayoress of St. Hilda, to a tea at 5.30, and afterwards (at 7.50) to a social evening at tho St. Hilda Town Hall.
