THE OLD POST OFFICE

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Would* you kindly grant mo space in which to ask tho citizens of Dunedin if they have gone to sleep? To tho observer looking at the old Post Office building in Princes street, it seems that such is the case; hut tho attention of our leading business men has only to be drawn strongly enough to this monument to our apathy for our leaders to rise as on© man and demand in no uncertain manner a new budding, -and, moreover, a start _ to ba made on tho same at once. It is folly for the Government to say it has _no money, for I contend that at a time when our finances'are in such a bad way the Government cannot afford to have such a valuable block of land as the Post Office site lying practically idle when it is paying out largo sums every year individuals for rent of offices which could all be accommodated In the new building, for which I behove plans have < already been prepared. It wonld be most interesting to every citizen if you could publish particulars of the amount of money spent every year in Dunedin by the Government for rent of offices, and I trust you will not experience the same difficulty in securing these as Mr Statham apparently had last session.

Before concluding: I would Eke to re mind the Returned Soldiers’ Assooiatiof that if a start were made on this building work could be secured for quite a raim ber of their unemployed members, so it behoves this association to join in demand' ing a start to be made with a buildup which would not only be a credit to Dun edin, but a great convenience to our busi ness men.—l am, etc.,' Wake Up. August 19.
