OBITUARY

There passed away at his residence this morning Mr A. Allen, who was in the service ot the Otago Harbor Board for some twenty-two years, latterly occupying the position of cashier. Mr Allen retired from tho board’s service last year, m consequence of illness, carrying with him the high esteem of the members and emplovces of the board. She arrived at Fort Chalmois in 1858 on the first trip of the ship Robert Henderson, and experienced all the hardships of the pioneering days. Then there were no roads, and means of communication with various parts of the country were difficult and laborious. Houses of the '‘wattle and dab” variety were built by the settlers themselves, and provisions had to be carried for long distances by* thotc wdio lived away from the towns. After some time on the Taicri. deceased went to Invercargill, where she was mained. Afterwards the young couple removed to Waikouaiti and* thence to Palmerston, where Mr Robertson carried on business as a saddler. Going to Oarnaru, he entered into business there, and carried it on till his death in 1905. Mrs Robertson, who was well known and highly respected, leaves a family of two rens and two daughters, some twenty-grandchil-dren. and about twelve ,reat-grandchil-dren. Her sons are Mr J. Robertson (Oarnaru) and Mr A. Robertson (Lnggato), and the daughters Mrs H. M‘Lauchlan (Hnnediin) and Mrs J. B. Sinclair (Temuka). Eight or nine grandsons served with the N.Z.E.F. in . the recent Great War. The body was brought to Oarnaru on Sunday from Temuka (where deceased had lived with her daughter during tho past few years), and was interred in the Oarnaru Cemetery.
