SOCIAL AT ART GALLERY

STATIONERY FIRM FUNCTION. About 300 people gathered at the Art Gallery Hall last evening, when the two well-known stationery firms of Coulls, Culling, and Co. and J. Wilkie and Co. held a social gathering to celebrate their approaching amalgamation and the jubilee of Messrs Coulls, Culling, and Co. The hall was decorated for the occasion, and the gathering was a great success. A programme of songs and recitations was provided, with dances at frequent intervals. The following contributed to the programme-Mr J. Johnson (‘ The Play,’ from ‘ The Sentimental Bloke ’), Mr E. E. Wilkinson ; Messrs W. E. M'Lean and C. C. Drummond gave ‘ The Battle Eve ’ as a duet, and Messrs T. M’Clelland and H. Hogg 1 Flow Gently, Deva.’ Songs were contributed by Miss Berry (‘ Life’s Lullaby ’), Miss Collett (‘ Damon Messrs J. Robertson (‘Steering Home’), W. E. M'Lean (‘Songs of Araby’), C. G. Drummond (‘Rolling Down to Rio ’), and J. Holgate, the accompaniments being played by Miss Margaret Gawne, Miss Vera M'Gregor, and Mr H. B. Austing. The toast list was as follows:—*J. Wilkie and Co.” (proposed by Mr H. Coull, and responded to by Mr J. C. H. Somerville), “ Coulls, Culling, and Co.” (Mr T. Somerville, response by Mr T. C. Coull), “ Amalgamated Firms and Directors” (Mr J. G. Patterson, responded to by Messrs T. Somerville and H. Coull), “The Staff” (Mr J. C. H. Somerville, responses by Messrs Geo. H.. Watts and F. W. Joseph). A presentation of a solid silver mirror was made by Mr T. Somerville to Mrs Jas. Wilkie, the widow of the founder of the firm that bore his name. Mr Somerville also made feeling reference to the great loss suffered by both firms in the deaths of Mr A. E. Jenkins and Mr W. E. Gregory, the gathering standing in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect.
