REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY

HAWKE’S BAY v. OTAGO. By bearing Wellington on Wednesday the Hawke’s Bay team has proved that it is a very formidable one, and Otago will have to make a much better showing at ,Oarisbroolt i to-morrow than it did on Wednesday against Canterbury if it is to defeat the visitors. .The Hawke’s Bay team has only played three times in Dunedin—in 1889, when Otago won by 16 points) to 0; in 1901, when Hawke’s Bay won by 5 points to 3; and in 1303, when Otago won by 6 points to 0, Altogether eight matches have been played between the two provinces, of which Otago has won six and Hawke’s Bay one, while the match last year at Napier ended in a draw—6 points each. The Otago touring team considered last year that Hawke’s Bay had the makings of a very fine team, and by the display it put up against Wellington it is evidently a serious proposition. The Hawke’s Bay team arrived last evening, and were met by officials of the local union and conveyed to the Crown Hotel, where Mr V. G. Cavanagh wol■comed them on behalf of the Otago Rugby Union. The box plan for the match is now open at The Bristol, and ground tickets can be obtained at the Sports Depot or at S. Jacobs’s. The public are requested to come prepared with the exact money, and thus save time at the gates. Mr Eckhohl will control the game tomorrow.

The. third grade match Zingari v. High School will bo played at 1.30 as a curtainraiser.

TARANAKI BEATS MANAWATU. At Stratford yesterday Taranaki beat Manawatu by 22 points! to 6. The visitors opened up well, but failed to sustain attacks, while Taranaki (finding the strength of their opponents) throw the haHl about and played a long way above expectations. The attendance was about 3,000, the weather was good, the ground heavy, and the ball dry. Halfway through the first spell Lynskey (Taranaki) scored a neat try from a scrum on the line, but the kick was unsuccessful. As the result of a fine passing run by Lynskey, Jdhneon, Robertson, and Marks the last named! scored, and Coutts goalcd. Manawatu scored 1 a penalty goal, and at half-time the scores were 8 to 5 in Taranaki’s favor. The second half had gone only a few minutes when -Marks again scored from a passing rush; but the kick failed. Passing between Fogarty, ( AJlen, Marks, and Wilkinson resulted in the- last named scoring; but again the kick failed. Hiiuie -next scored between the posts, and Coutts goalcd. Parsons then scored Mairawatu’s only try after <a fine run, but unfortunately hurt his ankle when tackled on the line by the* full-back, and retired. Taranaki scored a goal from a mark by Johnson, making the final scores: Taranaki 22 Manawatu 6
