THE MELBOURNE STEAMER. The Union Company advises that the interstate passenger steamer Psloona is expected to leave Wellington to-day for Lyttelton and Dunedin, in continuation of her voyage from Melbourne. vessel is duo hero on Tuesday morning, and will discharge a quantity of general cargo, which includes transhipments ex the ftearners Orvieto, Rena, Largs Bay, Rationigi, Palermo, and Oturama. The RaJoona istimed to sail on Tuesday afternoon for Melbourne via, Bluff. THE OCEANIC COMPANY. Tho American mail steamer Ventura, which had been hold up at San Francisco pending a. settlc-incnt of the subsidy question by the United States Government, was scheduled to leave the Californian port on July 22 for Sydney via ports. A cablegram received by the Sydney agents stated that the service thereafter will bo according to schedule. This provides for the Ventura to leave Sydney on August 17 (one day late), tho Sonoma on September 1, and the Ventura again on October 18. with monthly sailings until the- end of lire Year.
FIRE ON THE EASTERN MOON
An outbreak of fire among the coal in the bunkers of the steamer Eastern Moon, laden with kerosene oil and benzine, from Now York for .Sydney, seriously jeopardised die safety of tho vessel. The Eastern’ Moon, which arrived at Newcastle on July 17, carried, amongst other cargo, 14,000 cases of kerosene and 7,600 cases of benaine, Fortunately tho fire was kept in check. Had it spread the outbreak must have been disastrous to the ship and all concerned. Fire was first discovered in the vessel’s bunkers on June 28, when she was 3,000 miles from Brisbane, and from that time onwards a continual succession of fires had occurred, and it was clue to tho vigilance of the ship’s crew that a valuable vessel and cargo were saved. The Eastern Moon reached Sydney on July 20 to complete discharging her inflammable cargo. ,
