CIVIC DEVELOPMENT
MAYOR’S MINUTE APPROVED,
HEW STANDING COMMITTEE
The Finance Committee of the City Council last evening gave further consideration to the minute which was leeently presented to the council by the mayor in connection with the appointment of an investigation and development coinmil tee.
in its report, which will come before next, week’s meeting of tlic e.niucil, the committees states: “Careful consideration has been given to the minute by the mayor regarding the creation ot an additional standing committee of the council, whose, (unction should be to consider and report on certain aspects of civic development. It seems clear that there is no objection to the setting up of such a yonnmUte. The new committee might, it is tiiought, be designated the City I)evclo;;r.u';:t Committee, and the .-cops, and power be left open to nerinit of any policy mailers Uiat either council or the mayor on his own initiative may at any tune refer to sir n committee for investigation and report to council. The only reservation the committee would make to such scope and powers would be that no question that conies under the present scope and .powers r-t the standing committees should be dealt wi;u or referred to the proposed iknv_ eoinmiUeo for consideration. This committee J£ in full accord with the mayor’s desires to assist to the utmost of its powers to advance the interests of the city ana bui rounding districts, even at !ne risk o. going to some extent beyond the statutory powers and duties 'prescribed by Taiviament for its guidance; but it is anxious to avoid anything in the. nature oi overlapping or dual control of the me tiers a. present relegated w the several standing committees.”
