The high tariff Senators won a- sweeping victory, defeating hy 43 votes to 22 Senator Lcnroot’s amendment to fix 60 per cent, as the maximum ad valorem equivalent of the specific rate of wool duties. Eight Republicans voted for the amendment and seven Democrats against it. Senator Lcnroot admitted that the battle fur the lower wool tariff was apparently lost, and lie warned Ida colleagues that the adoption of the proposed rates must result in the defeat of the Republican Party.

The Senate also defeated by 53 votes to 16 Senator Wadsworth’s amendment to reduce the proposed scoured wool rate from 33 to 28’ cents per pound.—A. and N.Z, Cable.
