JASCHA SPIVAKOVSKY

On Thursday evening next, followed by a concert on Saturday, at His Majesty’s Theatre, Messrs J. and N. Tait will present the celebrated young Russian pianist, Jascha Spivakovsky, in his first Dunedin concert. Jascha Spivakovsky is one of the few music geniuses whose wonderful ability, demonstrated in childhood, has hot departed with his growth to manhood. Not. able English and- Australian musical critics eulogise Spivakovsky, and acclaim him as a genius. His concerts in Sidney, Melbourne, and Auckland have been characterised by enthusiasm such as has seldom greeted the performance of any artist in Australasia. As the season in fiunedin is limited to ’ two concerts, special care has been given to the selection of the programmes, so that representation shall be given to all the great masters, as well as some of the more modern classics. The opening programme is a specially fine one, and the opening number, the Bach-Liszt ’Organ Fantasia and Fugue,’ will no doubt be appreciated by'music lovers. The programme also embraces a Chopin grour,, including ‘Berceuse,’ the ‘Butterfly Study,’ ‘ Revolutionary Study,’ and ‘ Bolero in A Minor, Op. 19,’ Liszt’s ‘.Gnomenreigen,’ and ‘La Campanella ’ (PagnniniLiszt); and Brahm’s ‘ Sonata in F Minor, Op. 5 ’ (Allegro, Maestoso, Andante, Scherzo. Intermezzo and Finale). This latter offering, which is being plaved for the first time hero by a world-famed pianist, is said to reveal this artist’s great gift for contrasting colors. One critic has said: "Particularly beautiful was the ‘Andante,’ breathed, softly as a lullaby.” The box plans for both concerts will be opened on (Monday at The Bristol. There are special concession tickets advertised for students and scholars from colleges.
