JASCHA SPIVAKOVSKY
BRILLIANT RUSSIAN PIANIST.
Such scenes of remarkable enthusiasm have boon enacted at the concerts of Jascha Spivakovsky at the Sydney Town Hall that they are worth describing foi\ the information of music-lovers, teachers, and students. Mr'L. Do Noskowsld, the well-known critic, wrote as follows to the J. and N. Tait management in Melbourne :—“ The season concluded amidst scenes of extraordinary enthusiasm. At the end of the programme hundreds oi people surrounded the platform asking for encores. Mr Spivakovsky played six extra items, and after the last bne people rushed into the artist’s room clamoring for more. Poor Jascha stood at the top of the stairs leading to the platform with a few faithful friends, who acted as a screen against his admirers, wlm pressed on all skies, shouting, ‘Marche Miiitaire!’ ‘ March Miiitaire!’ Liszt’s ‘ Tenth Rhapsody!’ ‘Oh please do play something!’ Mr Spivakovsky stood smiling and asking what he should play, but in tiie meantime the piano had been locked and people in the hall gradually dispersed. > Those in the artist’s room, however, still remained, until eventually the head usher took the position into hia bands by asking everyone out, and even putting out the lights, so that the room gradually emptied. But 1 as soon as the lights were switched on again another invasion followed. The situation seemed hopeless. Eventually Mr Spivakovsky made his way with difficulty to a side door, where hundreds were waiting. It seemed as if they would not let him get into the motor car. Finally ho succeded in doing so, and drove away, accompanied by cheers. He was very pleased with his reception, but very tired.” This brilliant pianist, who is at present attracting crowded audiences at the Town Hall, Wellington, will give two concerts only in His Majesty’s Theatre, Dunedin, on Thursday and .Saturday, August 3, and 5., The box plans for both concerts open on Monday at The Bristol.
