Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright

LONDON, July 24

Sir Frank Notley, marine superintendent for the P. and O. 'Company, gave evidence at the Egypt inquiry. He said that the lascars had been trained! in boat drill and bulkhead .door-closing in case of emergency, They were quite as good as British seamen. “I have been in many tight corners, and cannot wish for better seamen than lascars or Goanese.” Captain Ramon, P. and 0. Company’s assistant dock superintendent., said,, that lascars were as good seamen ns Europeans; but in an emergency he would prefer to have the falls of* a lifeboat in the hands of white men. Captain Ramon added that lascars could 1 stand the heat better, and were more suited for the work than British seamen. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
