CELEBRATING THE JUBILEE,

The Eastern and Associated Telegraph Companies celebrated their jubilee, entertaining 450 guests at a banquet in the Botanic Cardens and 2,000 at an al fresco fete. The guests included Sir James Allen, the Agents-General, cx-Govcrnors of the dominions, and prominent financiers and business men.

The Duke of York, in proposing the toast of submarine telegraphy and its relation to the associated telegraph companies, said: “Of the greatest importance to the Eastern Company was the prodigious faith, courage, and business ability of the lato Sir John Pender, whose genius stands out as a unique feature from the earliest days of submarine telegraphy.” The Duke of York referred to the astounding fact that the companies had laid 28,000 _ miles of cable since the armistice. He said he was greatly impressed; by the speed of transmission. Sydney received tho result of the Derby, for instance, in two and a-half minutes. Ho paid a tribute to tho companies’ services during the war, which had. greatly contributed to the success of the operations; also to the fact that they sent millions of words free on behalf of -wounded soldiers.

Sir John Donison-Pcnder (managing director of the Eastern and Associated Companies), in replying, said that trade followed the establishment of cable services. Two outstanding features which contributed to the development of the colonies were the sister enterprises—-the shipping and cable services.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
