AMERICAN TARIFF
THE WOOL IMPOST,
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.
WASHINGTON, July 25,
The Senate, fight over the woo! schedule in the tariff was renewed, when Senator Lenroot declared that the proposed duties on coarse wools were equal in some cases to as high as 137 per cent, ad valorem. Ho offered an amendment to fix the maximum ad valorem rate at 60 per cent., adding that the proposed 33 per cent, per lb rate on wool would mean a 100 per cent, ad valorem rate.
Senators Gooding, Bursum, and Stanfield (all from wool-growing States) insisted that high duties were justified. Senator Stanfield claimed to be the largest individual wool grower in the world. Many Republicans are frankly worried over the wool tariff situation.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
